The Farm to Market Alliance seeks to transform food crop markets through the active and long-term engagement of smallholder farmers, multiplying returns for all stakeholders in the supply chain. The Alliance is a consortium of eight leading agri-focused organisations [AGRA, Bayer, Grow Africa, IFC, Rabobank, Syngenta, UN World Food Programme and Yara] combining specific expertise and skills to enable smallholder farmers to access global markets.
The commitment of the Alliance is to empower 1.5 million farmers in developing countries, generating over USD 750 million of aggregated annual purchasing demand.
Farmer engagement is driven by multi-year buying contracts, which specify in advance minimum sell prices to allow smallholder families to plan beyond the farm gate, leading to informed, autonomous engagement in structured, inclusive commercial markets. These forward contracts also position smallholders for the first time with access to affordable finance, access to improved farming practices (improved seeds, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides) and access to improved post-harvest handling and storage equipment. Employing a broad holistic approach to smallholder development creates a systemic change in markets, benefitting the individual farmers as well as broadening the global supply base to meet increasing demands.
The Alliance is currently active in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zambia.
The Project Finance Expert will report directly to the Country Coordinator of the Farm to Market Alliance in the country, and liaise regularly with the Regional Finance Manager and staff of global FtMA members for technical guidance and industry best standards and trends. The position will involve frequent travel in the country, as well as participating in international meetings when required.
ROLES,DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Alliance seeks an experienced professional for the key role of ProjectFinance Expert in Kenya.
Under the management of the FtMA Country Coordinator, and with professional guidance from the FtMA Regional Finance Manager, the Project Finance Expert will be responsible for delivery of effective and affordable finance solutions to value chain actors in FtMA projects in Kenya.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The position holder will be responsible for analysing the need for finance in FtMA projects in Kenya, and for meeting those needs with the most adequate products from financial service providers (FIs). To this end, the position holder builds relationships with the other team members on national level (Country Coordinator, Extension Officer, other national staff), with national actors in FtMA projects (farmer organisations, off-takers, farm input suppliers), with FIs (commercial and development banks, MFIs, credit guarantee funds and crop loss insurance providers), with government institutions and regulators on national level and with key actors in the regional and global FtMA – and most importantly, leverage these relationships to arrive at effective and affordable finance and risk management solutions. The position holder has a very hands-on and make-work attitude, making sure that financial markets work better for farmers and for all other actors in the said supply chains.
The candidate realises milestones per country (business plan, finance need, finance delivery) to facilitate monitoring and increase transparency of the process to all actors.
The Finance Expert will be responsible for the following duties:
- Analyse the need for finance solutions in collaboration with the Country Coordinator and the local FtMA coalition
- Adapt the design of existing finance structures to meet those needs, blending solutions both from local/national and international financial services providers, insurance companies and development and donor agencies
- Ensure availability of finance solutions for all actors in the FtMA supply chains (farmers and farmer organizations, off-takers/traders/processors, input suppliers, financiers etc.) in the national portfolio
- Monitor progress of finance delivery against planning, flag and take corrective action in case of deviation in the earliest possible stage
- Actively participate in a group of country-level Project Finance Experts under the leadership of the Regional Finance Manager; offer assistance to, and share experience with, Project Finance Experts in other countries
- Provide feedback to Regional Finance Manager on design of required products or finance solutions
- Maintain regular contact with local Financial Institutions (banks, MFIs, NBFIs) that participate in FtMA projects
- Define ToRs and collaborate with consultants on work sub-contracted to consultancy agencies or other actors in the field of Finance, Risk, Insurance, Cooperative Governance and E&S
- Interface with crop loss insurance and other risk management providers
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Delivery of finance solutions according to pre-agreed targets
- Selection of financial institutions and assistance to the selection of farmer organizations and off-takers according to pre-set criteria
- Application of the FtMA graduation model to new farmer organizations
- Organisation of training and extension in the fields of financial literacy, contracting, cooperative governance
- Feedback to regional level of needs for product development, recurring problems and market opportunities.
STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS,EXPERIENCE,KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Education: Bachelor’s or First University degree in Business Administration, Finance, Economics or other related field.
Experience: Five years or more of progressively responsible professional experience implementing banking or development finance solutions with exposure to the Food and Agribusiness sector. Work experience in Africa and especially Eastern / Southern Africa markets and engagement experience with the private sector are essential. Understanding of government policies related to the agribusiness sector is a pre-requisite.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Hands-on, result-oriented attitude with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of agri-finance, smallholder farmer / SME and commercial agriculture finance models
- Blended finance solution delivery, combining contributions of commercial FIs, MFIs, NBFI, development FIs, risk management suppliers and other relevant actors to integrated finance and risk management solutions
- Familiarity with planning and implementing smallholder market support and capacity building programs at national or sub-national level
- Ability to explain strategies and projects to field counterparts and communicate with local governments and partners clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
- Strong relationship-building and relationship-management skills, with experience in developing and maintaining high-level private sector contacts
- Tact and ability to work harmoniously with people of different national and cultural background
- Resourcefulness, initiative and problem solving skills, strong client orientation for value chain stakeholders

Language: Fluency in national language and (level C) in English. Knowledge of additional local languages is an added advantage.
