Job Title: Water Hygiene and Sanitation (WASH) Intern

Department / Section:Kenya Program

Reports to: Narok Project Officer

Length of contract: 6 Months

Duty Station: Narok

Purpose of the role: The WASH Intern will ensure that water, sanitation, and hygiene projects, and awareness are implemented effectively, professionally, and in accordance with the culture and practices of the local population.

This will involve working with other project officers, relevant government departments, other NGOs and the communities in the project area.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Key activities will involve implementation of community WASH activities in Narok County. He/she, in consultation with Narok Project Officer will ensure that WASH strategies and plans are prepared and implemented per World Concern policies contributing to World Concern’s long range goal.
  • Lead field assessments, planning, designing and management of different projects aimed at ensuring community and schools water supply.
  • Prepare engineering design and technical specifications and preparation of Bill of quantities.
  • Management of WASH hardware such as digging and protection of shallow wells, water distribution networks, water pans, roof catchment systems in institutions and latrine toilets in schools and other related activities.
  • Facilitate capacity building initiatives to train community water users and management committees on management and governance of water facilities including formulating a partnership with Kenya Water Institute to design and implement a training program for water operators, technicians and water resources users association
  • Ensuring quality and integrity of implementation, including adherence to technical guidelines, administrative systems, and  established deadlines
  • Evaluating the relevance and appropriateness of current and future programming in relation to water, sanitation and hygiene promotion in the Narok context
  • Assisting in the preparation of the WASH proposals.
  • Analysing the baseline study data to determine the underlining needs of the beneficiaries.
  • Contributing to contingency planning for possible WASH emergency response if required.
  • Contributing to the preparation of internal and external reports for the NGO and donors, including expenditure plans, situation and impact reports.
  • Establish and build World Concern relationships with Narok communities including the local church and other stakeholders.
  • Identify linkages and areas of collaboration and synergy with other organizations implementing WASH related activities.
  • Actively promote WC approach to development with emphasis on promoting transformational development through support, coaching, mentoring and feedback.
  • Enable individuals, groups, churches and communities to identify needs and encourage involvement in WASH activities.
  • Support the development of existing WASH activities, the establishment of wash groups, clubs and the formation of community focused networks.
  • Ensure that targets and work schedules are adhered to in order to achieve objectives, maintain appropriate documentation and prepare monthly activity and achievement reports.
  • Carry out evaluation of initiatives and actions in a systematic way with WC staff and any other relevant group.
  • Perform any other functions deemed necessary or as delegated by the supervisor in order to meet the level of services in the organization.

Qualification and skills required:

  • Degree in water related Engineering, or other relevant training
  • Experience in cross-cultural settings would be an asset
  • Experience working in ASALs will be an added advantage.
  • Ability to speak Maasai language will be an added advantage.
