The Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa (BMIA) and the Ford Foundation have partnered to establish a Community Media Fund (CMF) to improve citizens’ access to relevant information that enables the public to support policies and practices that drive inclusive economic and human development locally, regionally and nationally. The purpose of the CMF is to elevate voices from marginalized communities through the development and advancement of citizen and community reporting on financial and economic issues.

Through Hivos, CMF has made disbursements to grantees in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa in the years 2018, 2019 and 2020 as a grants administrator.

Hivos is seeking the services of a consultant who will facilitate sessions on the Future of Community Media, with a focus on new ways of working and their impact on community media. The consultant will be expected to facilitate sessions on;

Responsibilities

  • Strengthening the understanding of the community radio concept, identity and principles.
  • Increasing productivity, ensuring relevance in the Kenyan context.
  • Maximizing increased access to mobile phones, internet and information communication technology for community media relevance.
  • Localization of content.
  • Documentation of the impact of community media.
  • (Responsive) skills acquisition.

Qualifications

  • A good understanding of key issues regarding community media (radio, television, print media) in Kenya and Africa at large.
  • A good understanding of the community media landscape in Kenya, particularly strengths, weaknesses and determinant factors of their effectiveness.
  • Demonstrate experience in facilitating trainings targeted at community media entities, with a focus on strategy, capacity engagement and response to changes in the operating environments.
  • Be well versed with the concepts of financial literacy, financial journalism, social justice, transparency and accountability, data and communication for development
  • Provide evidence on the facilitation of sessions on the topics captioned under ‘Description of consultancy’ above.
  • Be a holder of a bachelor’s degree in social sciences, arts, mass communications or a related but relevant field.
  • Experience in facilitating, moderating online meetings, trainings, session. Familiarity with a variety of platforms such as Blue jeans, Zoom and Skype is critical.
  • Excellent spoken and written English.
  • Excellent planning, moderation skills.

Deliverables

  • Submission of guiding materials that will be basis of the content for training on the various sessions.
  • Development of presentations, factoring the virtual nature of the activity, and the need to keep participants engaged.
  • Facilitation of 3 sessions on the Future of Community Media, with a focus on new ways of working and their impact on community radio.
  • A report on the session facilitated during the sessions.

  1.  Background of the consultancy firm/individual.
  2.  Work-plan with clear timelines and deliverables.
  3. Team composition (if applicable) including qualifications and relevant experience. (All CVs of the team members must be annexed).
  4. A detailed financial proposal.
  5. A minimum of three referees.
